Brief History of Lahore & why it was meant for India:
- Lahore was one of the largest and most advanced city of unpartitioned India. Lahore was the capital of powerful Sikh Warrior Maharaja Ranjit Singh, who once owned Kohinoor diamond.

- According to 1941 Census, Lahore’s population consists of 40% of Hindus and Sikhs ; and 60% of Muslims. But that 40% of Sikhs and Hindus had 80% ownership in the property, hence non-Muslims had dominance in Lahore’s economy. So Lahore was meant for India.

Why did Radcliffe give Lahore to Pakistan?
- Radcliffe explained vaguely that he gave Lahore to Pakistan because Pakistan did not have any big city and he had already given Kolkata to India. This explains how Radcliffe Commission operated on undefined rules and in arbitrary manner.
- All the members of the Radcliffe Commission including Radcliffe were Lawyers. Radcliffe was an honest and upright judge. Neither Radcliffe not any other member has any specialized knowledge or experience for boundary demarcation. Due to lack of time, the UN was not involved and no proper rules and procedures were fixed for demarcation.
- For Radcliffe time constraint was the major factor due to which he could not do the demarcation as per proper rules and standards. He completed the task of demarcation in just five months.
- Equal representation of India and Pakistan in the Boundary Commission made it difficult to take a well informed decision
- Lahore was one of the worst epicentre of riots, many Hindus and Sikhs migrated to India even before the decision of the commission. The new Labour Government of Britain was in heavy debt due to war and was not capable of holding an unstable empire.
- Finally on 17th August,1946 ; Lahore became a part of Pakistan on basis of Muslim majority.
